Fun ways to stay cool during a Seattle heat wave

When the summer temperatures crank up, it can get really intense out there for your local Seattleite (especially those without AC). Here are some of my go-to activities to keep cool when it’s a scorcher out there.

Go for a float via paddle board or kayak

There are several great spots around the city for an enjoyable experience paddle boarding or kayaking, but these are some of my favorites:

Alki Beach / Elliott Bay (West Seattle)

  • Launch Point: Alki Kayak Tours

  • Rentals: Alki Kayak Tours (kayaks, SUPs, guided tours)

  • Local Tip: Check conditions before heading out. Calmest conditions are before 11 AM. Grab a bite at Marination afterwards to refuel. If the food line is long, order online from your phone instead, and head around to their back patio a grab a beverage while you wait. It’s much better than standing in line.

Lake Union (Downtown Seattle)

  • Launch Point: Agua Verde Paddle Club or Northwest Outdoor Center (NWOC)

  • Rentals:

  • Local Tip: Go early morning or during golden hour for calmer water and less boat traffic. Take a look at events happening on the lake that day to get a sense of how busy it’ll be. And if you’re a nerd like me, take a gander around the floating home communities to geek out on some sweet Seattle real estate.

Lake Washington/Cedar River (Renton)

  • Launch Point: Cedar River Trail Park or Renton Rowing Center

  • Rentals: Renton Rowing Center

  • Local Tip: There’s an awesome sandbar a short paddle northwest of the rowing center (near the logs) that’s a great place to tie up and take a snack break with friends. I like to pack myself a burrito for easy sandbar snacking.

Catch a floating rave on Lake Union

When the love of floating the lake and house music collide, you’ve got yourself a Seattle Paddle Rave. Super informal, super fun, super Seattle. Bring your paddle boards, kayaks, life vests, and best floating dance moves. Check out Seattle Paddle Rave’s website for all upcoming events and information.

  • Local Tip: Grab a beer and a bite at Lake Union’s hot new brewery, Gasworks Brewing (that you can paddle-up to!)

Go for a swim at a public beach

Madison Park Beach (Lake Washington – East Seattle)

  • Vibe: Iconic, family-friendly beach with stunning views and gentle waters.

  • Features: Lifeguards (in summer), restrooms, grassy areas, nearby cafes.

  • Local Tip: Grab a cone at Scoop Du Jour after your swim, it’s a neighborhood staple.

Magnuson Park Beach (Sand Point – Northeast Seattle)

  • Vibe: Long shoreline with shaded grassy areas, perfect for all-day hangs.

  • Features: Lifeguards, restrooms, dog beach nearby, kayak rentals.

  • Local Tip: Pack water shoes - the entry has a few slick rocks before you hit deeper water.

Matthews Beach Park (Lake Washington – North Seattle)

  • Vibe: Largest freshwater swimming beach in Seattle.

  • Features: Lifeguards, docks, shaded picnic areas.

  • Local Tip: Ideal for families - ample parking and playground nearby.

Madrona Park Beach (Lake Washington – Central Seattle)

  • Vibe: Scenic, quiet beach close to downtown with classic PNW vibes.

  • Features: Lifeguards, grassy slopes, picnic benches.

  • Local Tip: Head here during golden hour - the light through the trees is chef’s kiss.

Play around at a spray park

Great for the kiddos or for just dipping your toes! Open daily through September 1st.

Eat some ice cream

Salt & Straw

  • Locations: Ballard, Capitol Hill, University Village

  • Vibe: Portland-based favorite known for bold, rotating seasonal flavors (like Honey Lavender or Pear & Blue Cheese).

  • Hot Tip: Ask for a split scoop - two flavors in one scoop size!

Frankie & Jo’s

  • Locations: Capitol Hill, Ballard

  • Vibe: 100% plant-based (but you’d never know it). Known for unique flavors like Salty Caramel Ash or California Cabin.

  • Hot Tip: The gluten-free waffle cone is a must. Their date shake is also next-level.

Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream

  • Locations: West Seattle, Capitol Hill, Wallingford, Queen Anne, U Village, and more

  • Vibe: A Seattle staple. Always-local ingredients and always a line (worth it). Try Yeti or Honey Lavender.

  • Hot Tip: Skip the line by ordering ahead online. And don’t sleep on the ice cream sammies!

Find some AC at a museum or library

The Seattle Public Library – Central Branch

  • Vibe: Massive, modern, and air-conditioned. Great for reading, working, or taking in the glory of the building’s architecture.

  • Bonus: Free Wi-Fi and sweeping city views from the upper floors.

  • Hot Tip: Grab a cold brew from nearby Monorail Espresso and take it to Level 10 for panoramic peace.

Seattle Art Museum (SAM)

  • Vibe: Wander rad galleries filled with world-class art while staying cool in the AC.

  • Bonus: First Thursdays = free admission!

  • Hot Tip: The lower-level cafe is a quiet, cool retreat with good snacks and drinks.

Whether it’s floating across Lake Union, enjoying ice cream from your favorite local shop, or exploring a museum, Seattle has a cool down option for everyone. Stay hydrated, apply that sunscreen, and keep on groovin’!
